Summer Learning Journey Activity #19: Picture Perfect

My task: On your blog, write a short story about what you think is happening in the picture. Be sure to tell us where you think the people are and what you think they were doing at the time that they stopped to pose for the selfie. To earn full points, the story must be 8 – 10 sentences long.

I chose picture #3
This woman is travelling around this country and visited this place in particular. She has taken several different pictures and selfies because she wants to show the world how beautiful this place is. Out of all of her pictures she has taken there is only one daring selfie that makes you hold your breath. She sees a tall building and she thinks to herself " What a beautiful view I would get up there". She was doubting her thoughts for a minute, then she realises that life is too short and you have to take enormous risks sometimes. Her final decision was that she would do it. She took a short ride in a cab, as soon as she reached her destination she bolted up the stairs. It took her approximately three minutes, she eventually reached the roof. She didn't want to just take a photo she wanted to take a selfie, but not an ordinary selfie, but in fact and extraordinary selfie. She toppled on the edge of the roof, facing her phone with a big smile and clicked the button. Her heels touching the edge, it was a long way down but she managed not to fall off. That's how April took her daring selfie.

Summer Learning Journey #18: The midnight zone

My Task: On your blog, tell us how you will solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer. I solved out 3 answers.
Answer 1: You will need 20 children because 15 x 20 = 300 and you will also need 10 adults because 10 x 20 = 200. 200 + 300 = 500
Answer 2: You will need 20 adults because 20 x 15 = 500, you won't need to use any children. Answer 3: You will need 8 children because 15 x 8 = 120 and 14 adults because 14 x 20 = 280. 120 + 280 = 500.

Summer Learning Activity #17: Fabulous Flora

My task: On your blog, tell us whether or not you would like to try your hand at flax weaving. Does it interest you? Why or why not?

I have done flax weaving before with the whole school before.  I thought that it was quite interesting the way you could make different things with flax.  I personally wouldn't do it in my spare time because I don't find it that interesting.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #14: Going, going, gone.

On your blog, post a description of life in New Zealand in 2018. Please remember that the people who read your post will have never been to New Zealand or even seen a picture so it is your job to ‘paint a picture’ of New Zealand using your words. You can also post pictures, if you wish. Be sure to fully attribute the pictures. New Zealand is a little country living on the edge of the world. NZ has two islands which are North and South island. The South Island is more of the country side between the two. South Island has several mountains, hillsides, rivers ect. The North Island has some parts that is a country side but majority of North Island is cities. Many tourist come to visit famous attractions in NZ like Milford Sound, Pancake Rocks, Queenstown and many more. Believe it or not but theses 3 famous, well known movies: Lord of the rings, The Chronicles of Narnia and Avatar was directed in NZ. The people are kind and care for each other here in NZ, which is the most special part of all.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #13: Living on the edge

On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.

Dear Bridget, Emily, Tess, Tara & Lucy

As you all know I am on a vacation in The Tundra.  It is freezing over here, there are so many beautiful flora and fauna over here.  Along my walk I discovered some reindeer, the are so fascinating it reminded me of Rudolf the red nose reindeer!.  I also saw an arctic fox chasing an arctic hare, the dramatic chase lasted around 5 minutes.  The hare escaped just in time.  I just can't get over the fact that it's so beautiful and cold, I am a little homesick because I miss you guys so much.  It's so weird not seeing you guys, I will be back in two weeks.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #12: Towering Timbers

For this activity I write down if I think logging is allowed in NZ or not and why.

I think it should be allowed because it provides people jobs.  If the logging industries take down too much forests then I think that it should stop because trees are important to animals and humans.  The birds wouldn't have anywhere else to live and it'll be easier for the predators to devour them.  If there aren't any trees there won't be any oxygen either.  I'm alright with logging as long as it doesn't affect nature too much.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #11: Salt and Pepper

For this activity I had to create my own hotel and say what I would use to build it and where. I could either use google drawings or sketch my room, I decided to sketch mine.
My hotel would be in The Bahamas because it's beautiful there. My hotel would be made out of wood, like those huts except a bigger version. My hotel would be in the water on platforms with a slide. It would also have railings on just in case someone trips up.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #11: Pancakes and Maple Syrup?

For this activity I had to choose one of my favourite foods and show you the recipe for it.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #10: Scaling New Heights

For this activity I had to write down 5 questions I would like to ask Sir Edmond Hillary about his life.

1:  How do you feel about being on the $5 note?

2: How many times have you almost died?

3: Besides from climbing Mt Everest what is the most dangerous thing you have ever done in your life?

4: When you made it up to the top what first came to your mind?

5: What was the first thing you did when you went back home to your family?

Summer Learning Journey Activity #9: The WWF ( World Wildlife Found)

For this activity I had to watch two videos and write full sentences and tell you.

1: The name of the animal the WWF is working to save.

2: What the WWF is doing to help the animal.

3:What, if any, success they have had protecting the animal.

There were two videos I had to watch and one was about tigers and the other was about freshwater seals. In the freshwater seals video there was a man explaining how these seals are endanger, they are about 360 individuals left but this group of people try and prevent that.  They make snow banks for seals to give birth in, if a seal gives birth out in the open then half of the litter will die because of the cold, human disturbance and predators.   The other video about tigers is basically saying that it doesn't matter where in the world you are, you can still help endangered tigers.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #8: The Secretive Skink

For this activity I had to list 3 pros and 3 cons about being a doc ranger. I also writ down at the bottom of my post if I want to be a doc ranger or not

Pros:

1: You help animals live a better life.

2: You kill predators to prevent other animals like kiwi from being extinct.

3: One little thing you do can go a long way.

Cons:

1: You can accidentally get injured during rescuing animals.

2: You can accidentally cut your finger off when setting traps.

3: You could get in a bad crash.

I wouldn't want to be a Doc Ranger because it's not my thing, I am interested in other things like art, sports and cooking. But Ka Pai for those who are Doc Rangers.

Summer Learning Journey #7: Fantastic Beasts

For this activity I had to create my own fantastic beast by using my imagination.  I had to describe my creature with adjectives as well.  Here is what I came up with.

I drew my fantastic beast.  My creature is a mix between Maleficent and a mermaid. Her wings are very frail, her horns are tough and unbreakable and her tail is uncontrollable.   As you can see it has the signature mermaid tail and Maleficent’s horns and wings. This mermaid is cursed by Maleficent, eventually Maleficent’s spirit is let out of the mermaid’s mouth.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #6: Weird and Wonderful

For this activity I had to solve this maths question: Let’s imagine that you are given a cactus for your birthday. To keep it alive, you must give it 3 ml of water every day.
Over one full year, how much water will you need to give your cactus plant? The Answer Is: 1095 ml
I solved it out by doing 3 x how many days of the year which is 365.
3 x 365 = 1095.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #5: Fabulous Ferns

In this activity I had to choose three NZ teams that have the word Fern in it.  I also had to put each teams uniforms next to their names and I had to choose which uniform I liked the best and why.

Silver Ferns:

The Football Ferns:

Black Ferns:

My favourite would have to be the Silver Ferns' uniform
because it has the silver fern on the side and it's simple.

Summer Learning Journey Activity # 4: The Tāne Mahuta Tree

In this activity I have to explain why I would/wouldn't want to visit the Tāne Mahuta in person one day. I would love to visit the Tāne Mahuta because it would be a fun experience getting to visit an endemic tree. I would also want to know how many people it would take to circle the whole tree. I also have never seen or have been near a tree as big as the Tāne Mahuta. The age of the Tāne Mahuta is unknown but it's estimated between 1,250 and 2,500 years old, it is also the largest kauri known to stand today. I think it's special and it would be an honour to visit it in real life.

Summer Learning Journey Activity # 3: The digital foot print

For this activity I had to make my own version of the digital foot print.

Summer Learning Journey Activity #2: My home town

In this activity I had to describe my hometown with lots of adjectives.

My hometown is In the South Island, West Coast near Moana, called Rotumanu, Kumara.  I have lived here ever since I was four years old, I am now 12.  I am originally from the Philippines, life there is way different.  Rotumanu is surrounded by sheep, cattle, nature, farms, noise ect.  Rotumanu is peaceful because there isn't much traffic on the roads nearby.   My family's farm consists of  a combination with sheep and cattle.  I also live near a bridge, underneath it is a crystal clear river.  The river is called The Crooked River, the river is freezing cold.  Rotumanu is special because of many things like the people, amazing swimming holes,  farms, ect.
There's no place I'd rather be.

Summer Learning Journey # 1 Activity: 3 fascinating facts about NZ

In this activity I had to find three facts out of 20 that captured my attention.

1: 30% of NZ is forest.

2: Queen Elizabeth II is officially queen of NZ, represented in the country by a Governor General.

3: The official language is English and Maori.

The Ghost Town: Waiuta

The Ghost Town: Waiuta

By: Mary Duran

Waiuta is a designated ghost town that was once a place where men sacrificed their lives while gold mining.  Waiuta is located specifically near Ikamatua, up the Snowy River , South of Reefton, West Coast of the South Island.  Waiuta is famously known for the gold mining industry which was founded in 1905 till 1951

Waiuta’s History:

The first mine shaft called Blackwater Shaft was first operated in 1908 and was 563m in depth.
The mine was then extended in 1926, the first mineshaft named Blackwater North claim was
renamed Prohibition.  The Prohibition Shaft took over later on in 1938 and incredibly reached
879m in depth.  The mine eventually produced almost 21,262,142 grams of gold.
Over the time more workers began to settle in the area.

What Waiuta is Today:

Today Waiuta is a historic ghost town for tourists to come upon and learn about what Waiuta once was.  There is still surprisingly a few buildings left that include  the former police station, three cottages and an old barber shop.  There is a lodge for anyone to stay for as long as they want.  Waiuta is also one of NZ’s most popular ghost towns, because of its successful gold mine.
Waiuta, a gold mining town since 1905, but is now an abandoned ghost town and a great tourist attraction with only a few of the original buildings.

Weekly Reflection

I prefer a not so structured classroom because self directed learning is a good way to learn how to be independent.   I think self directed learning has made me even more independent, I was already independent but self directed learning showed me that being independent can teach you a lot of things.  This week I have achieved two water colour artworks, which I really like the look of.  This week although I haven't really thought of my personal inquiry I will most definitely take some action on it next week.

Rapunzel Sentence

Sentence:  She scolded him fiercely for daring to enter and steal from her garden

My Version:  The cold mysterious rotten smell filled the warm air.  As the dead Autumn leaves crunched beneath his feet his eyes finally met with the mysterious ‘creature’.  Little did he know that it wasn’t a creature, it was indeed the owner. She scolded at him as if he had killed one of her loved ones.  Their neighbour had an old wrinkled face that terrified all of the villagers.

Weekly Reflection

SDL means self directed learning,  SDL is a good opportunity to getting your stuff that you need to get done, done.  I like doing SDL because it's much easier than someone telling you exactly what you need to do in a session.  I think that I'm pretty good at managing my SDL time.  I'm exited about my personal inquiry that I'm doing with Tess because I've never done anything like what we are doing yet.  I will for sure do my personal inquiry in some of my SDL time.

Weekly Reflection

I think that things are working for me because I'm getting most of my things done.  I still haven't decided what I'm going to do for my personal inquiry, but I still have ideas that I could possibly do.  I am still working on my watercolour portfolio because I don't even know what I'm going to paint.  I think that I have improved in my basketball skills because we have been working on them.  I love doing scratch because it's creative and you get to practice you coding skills, I hope to do more games in the future.

As the wind brushed against her face her soft red lips soon began to form a wide smile.    It had been a long time since she felt joy overfill her heart. Colour changing cats quick write

For today's quick write we had 5 minutes to create a piece of writing about an inventor. The sentence starter that was given to us was: "The cats out of the bag now"

“The cats out of the bag now”  whispered Sven. Sven is actually Bill Nye the science guy in disguise.  Sven had made cats that change colours when you tap them, Sven made his terrific invention 6 months earlier.   Sven and his “sidekick” Eric went to the NYC science lab and put the cats they stole from a crazy cat lady into a machine.  The machine looked perfect, but once they had pressed a button to start it up everything started to malfunction. A few sparks leapt out onto Sven’s $12000 Gucci lab coat and burned 3 holes in it, after a few hours the cats came out.  They looked normal at first but when they touched them they changed colours. That’s how Sven and Eric ended up with colour changing cats today.

Pauline and the Perseid

LO: use adjectives and adverbs to make the reader want to continue reading.
Word of the day: Perseid

“ Leave me alone, I’m about to watch the lights on the sky!” Pauline bellowed.  Pauline is an ignorant 22 year old that still lives with her parents that are about to turn to dust and always wants things to go her way, no matter what.  Pauline wanted to watch the Perseid that was about to happen. Perseid only happens once a year in August and it’s very rare. “ Pauline Crellie Jones come here at this instant!” Yelled her mum.
“ But I want to see the Perseid!!”
“Who cares”

As soon as her mum said that the Perseid happened. Pauline ran as quick as a lightning bolt, when she eventually reached her destination which was the hill, she was too late.

Weekly reflection

Am I on task?

I think that I am on task and getting what I need to get done, done.  I am not on any overdue tasks on trello which is good, I want to go further into my personal inquiry and see what I actually want to do.  Everyday is a pretty good day for me because I really like to learn more things because it is informational and good for my future.  I think I did an amazing job on my this day in history creations, I want to finish my little red riding hood next week and also my scratch. Next week I want to get as much things done, but the main thing I am going to focus on is my personal inquiry.

Hurricane Bellat

For this day I collaborated with Emily & Thomas and we made a stop motion for the Belle Hurricane.
So what:  There are several hurricanes happening all over the world and it's devistating to know people dying and getting injured, it's sad for people that have lost their homes and have to restart all over again.

Quick write setting

The air is full of silence and deadliness in this ghost town.  All the trees have already started to rot and fade away, the ground is dim and dull.  The sky is never blue, no one else is here except for one person… me. Everyone had vanished off to somewhere else to escape the invasion.  The last thing I heard were screams of children getting kidnapped.

Mysterious explosions in Colombia!

Mysterious explosions in Colombia!

This Day In History

By Emily & Mary

About this article

There were 20 trucks loaded with dynamite, these trucks stopped in Buenaventura. 13 of these trucks headed to Bogato, the other 7 were going to a different location so they were parked overnight. Just after midnight the 7 trucks blew up killing over 1,000 people and injuring thousands of people. It is still a mysterious today, no one knows why the trucks blew up.

So What?

These trucks were fully loaded with dynamite and it is very dangerous, these trucks killed over 1,000 people and injuring many people as well. It just shows that trucks shouldn’t be carrying explosives everywhere because you don’t know when they might explode.

This week was really fun because I got to go to hockey and our team won in pool B.  It was interesting and informational when constable Jos because I learnt more about cyber bullying and it needs to stops.  Next week I want to keep thinking about my personal project because I haven't made up my mind, also I want to finish grade 3 on Khan Academy.
