SLJ Day 4 Individual Pursuits Activity 1 - Making A Racket

For this activity, watch these videos about Serena and Venus Williams.
On your blog, tell us three things that you learned from watching these videos, as well as one thing you would still like to know.

Related image1: Although in 2017 Serena was the highest paid female athlete she was number 51 overall and that just goes to show how unbalanced the payment that goes towards sportsmen is.  I knew that men get payed more, but I didn't know how immensely they do.
2: In 2005 Venus won Wimbledon in what was the longest women's finals in history.
3: Serena has earned over $80M during her career, winning 25 grand slams.
One thing I would still want to know is when they'll equalize athlete's pay.

  1. Good morning Mary!

How was your evening? What did you have for dinner?

Nice work on this post! I really like how you have written so much for each of the facts. Well done.

Serena has worked so hard to be the highest paid female athlete! She must be so proud of herself. I wonder how long she spends training every day? I didn’t know that she was number 51 overall. Thank you for teaching me this :)

The longest women’s final that Venus played in was over two and a half hours long! She must have been exhausted afterwards! What is something that you think you could spend over two and a half hours doing?

$80M is a lot of money! What would you do if you earned that much money?

You have come up with a really thoughtful question. Well done! As far as I know there are a few different perspectives on athlete’s pay. Maybe you could look into it a bit more? I’d love for you to let me know why you think that it is that female athletes get paid less.

Lovely work on this post Mary!

  2. Hi Matilda

Last night I had fish & chips which was lovely since we haven't had it for a while.

It's really impressive how Venus played over two & a half hours long, she must be really fit. Something I would spend over two & a half hours doing is probably working on the farm.

$80M is so much money. If I were to earn that much money I would probably gift my parents to a wonderful vacation for just them two since they hardly travel. What would you do if you earned $80M?

I think that female athletes get paid less since they're simply female, and females aren't up to men's standards in sports. For example men and women have different distances, weights, etc in sports and that's why men get paid more, since they do more than women. That's just my opinion, what's yours?

Thank you for commenting and I hope you're enjoying your day so far :)

    1. Hi Mary!

Thanks for this awesome reply! I love how much effort you are putting in!

Thank you for sharing your opinion. I can tell you have thought very deeply and carefully about this topic.

There a quite a few different factors that influence the pay of athletes. One factor that may contribute to the pay difference is that there are generally fewer people watching female sports.

Another factor that may influence the pay is that men have been playing sports for longer, and people are still getting used to seeing women play.

If you are still interested in this topic I’d encourage you to do more research on it and form your own opinions about the pay difference. It is a really interesting subject that a lot of people are really passionate about.

I’m very impressed with how you are questioning what you have learned! Keep up the amazing work!

      Matilda
